How Spinal Decompression Works

Spinal decompression is a highly effective, non-surgical solution for many types of pain and discomfort. Spinal decompression is especially effective in treating pain caused by disc herniation (or bulging disc), degenerative discs, and posterior facet syndromes. Spinal decompression works by gently taking pressure off of the spinal discs, creating a negative force (suction into the disc) that pulls water, oxygen, and other nutrients back into the disc. By reversing the forces of gravity, spinal decompression reverses the damage to the discs by providing the nutrients required for healing and long-term pain.

Conditions That Respond Well

There is a broad range of back- and neck-related issues that can be addressed with spinal decompression, often in conjunction with other corrective treatments. If you are wondering whether it’s right for you, we’ll be happy to evaluate you and give you our best recommendations.

The most common issues that can benefit from spinal decompression include:

  • Bulging discs
  • Disc degeneration
  • Facet syndrome
  • Herniated discs
  • Low back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Numbness/tingling in the arms, hands, legs/feet
  • Sciatica
  • Shooting pain in the arms, hands, legs/feet

What To Expect

Spinal decompression is a very safe, conservative, and gentle therapy – creating a truly pleasant patient experience. During treatment, you will lie comfortably on the decompression table while experiencing a gentle pull, which takes pressure off the problem area. Treatment sessions last no more than several minutes and most patients find this therapy very relaxing, often causing them to drift to sleep.
